Top 5 Mistakes During the English Writing Portion of the Citizenship Test

Published: May 18, 2026 • Author: Amira Khalil

The English writing portion of the naturalization interview requires you to write one out of three sentences correctly. While it sounds simple, nerves and common grammatical errors can lead to a failure.

Common Mistake #1: Spelling Simple Civic Words

Words like "Congress", "President", and "Citizens" are frequently misspelled. Even though the officer allows some minor errors, consistent misspelling of key terms can be an issue.

Common Mistake #2: Capitalization

Many applicants forget to capitalize "United States" or the beginning of the sentence. Practice writing these daily.
