After submitting Form N-400, the most common question applicants ask is: How long is the N-400 processing time? While timelines vary depending on your local USCIS field office, the national average in 2026 is between 7 to 11 months from the date of filing to the Oath of Allegiance.
Whether you file online or by mail, you will receive a Receipt Notice (Form I-797C) within a few weeks. This confirms that USCIS has accepted your application and payment.
Shortly after receiving your receipt, USCIS may schedule you for a biometrics appointment to take your fingerprints and photograph. However, in many cases in 2026, USCIS will notify you that they are reusing your previous biometrics, saving you a trip to the office.
This is the longest part of the N-400 processing time. During this waiting period, your application is placed in a queue at your local field office. This is the perfect time to practice your civics questions and prepare for the English test.
You will receive a notice in the mail indicating the date, time, and location of your interview. At the interview, the officer will test your English, ask you the 100 civics questions, and review your N-400 application.
