During your citizenship interview, the officer will likely ask if you have ever failed to file a federal, state, or local tax return. Being prepared with the right documentation and explanations is important.

The "Good Moral Character" Requirement

USCIS uses tax compliance as a primary indicator of good moral character. If you owe taxes but have a valid payment plan with the IRS, you are generally still eligible, but you MUST bring proof of the plan and your payments.
