100 vs. 128 Questions: Which Test Will You Take in 2026?

Published: May 18, 2026 • Author: Amira Khalil

One of the most frequent questions we receive is whether an applicant needs to study the 100-question or 128-question version of the US citizenship civics test. In 2026, this depends entirely on your filing date and specific USCIS guidelines.

The 2008 Version (100 Questions)

Most applicants who filed their N-400 before the recent changes are still eligible for the 2008 version. You will be asked up to 10 questions and must answer 6 correctly to pass.

The 2020 Version (128 Questions)

For those filing under newer rules, the 128-question pool is the standard. As we discussed in our 12-out-of-20 passing rule guide, this version is slightly more comprehensive.

Which one is for you?

Regardless of the version, the core principles of American democracy remain the same. Start practicing both versions on CivicFlare to be fully prepared.
